With the arrival of 2020-21 Upper Deck The Cup Hockey, a long hockey card season comes to a close. As usual, it has the usual super high-end mix of autographs, memorabilia and other cards that make the brand the premium pinnacle of the sport.
Hobby boxes are highlighted by three total autographs, two of which are autograph patch cards. Of those, at least one is a rookie autograph patch card. Beyond the signatures, there are two more premium cards and one numbered base card.
2020-21 Upper Deck The Cup Hockey Checklist Overview
The 2020-21 Upper Deck The Cup checklist has a lot going on. However, there is a base set that sticks with the super high-end roots of the rest of the release. Veterans are numbered to 249. So are rookies that don’t get the autograph patch treatment. Select base cards also have a mix of autograph and memorabilia versions: Gold Foil Autographs (/8), Gold Foil Patch (/8), Gold Foil Auto Patch (/8), Red Foil Tag (/4), Red Foil Auto Tag (/4), Green Foil Button (/3), Green Foil Auto Button (/3), Black Foil Autographs (1/1), Black Foil Shield (1/1) and Black Foil Auto Shield (1/1).
Of course, there are Rookie Autograph Patch cards, which typically emerge as modern players’ most valuable RCs. Depending on the player, these have either 249 or 99 copies each for the base versions. Parallels include Gold Foil (/24 or /12) Green Foil Button (/3) and Black Foil Shield (1/1).
Printing Plates can also be found, some of which have signatures.
Rookies, Rookies, Rookies
Headlined by Kirill Kaprizov and Alexis Lafreniere, the 2020-21 rookie class has several notable names. The season’s first-year class can be found on several parts of the 2020-21 The Cup checklist beyond the base set.
Rookie Class of 2021 starts as a standard insert set with cards each having 249 copies. Autograph (/50), Gold Foil Auto Patch (/25), Black Foil Auto Inscription (/5), and Black Foil Auto Patch (1/1) versions are also available.
Dual Auto Rookie Bookmarks (/18) return for another year. These also have Black parallels (1/1).
Brand Logo Autographs Rookies (/3) come in a booklet format.
2005-06 Rookie Auto Patch Retros (/10) take from the original release of The Cup and apply it to 2020-21 rookies.
Other first-year autographed memorabilia cards include Honorable Numbers Rookies (numbered to the player’s jersey number), Signature Materials Rookies (/99), Inked Insignias Rookies (/75), Scripted Swatches Rookies (/35), and The NHL Collection Rookies (/35).
More Autographed Memorabilia Highlights
Cup Foundations Autographs combine four swatches and a signature. Base versions for both rookies and veterans have 15 copies each. Patch parallels have five while Patch-Tag combinations are one-of-a-kind. Unsigned jersey versions are also available with rookies numbered to 99 and vets to 49. Parallels include a mix of patches and tags.
Autographed Rookie Gear (/24) and Pro Gear Jersey-Patch (/12) cards both take similar approaches. This also carries over to their respective one-of-one Patch parallels.
New this year is Chemical Composition Outer Core Auto Jersey cards. Base versions have 35 copies each while Inner Core patch cards have 15. Non-memorabilia Mantel Auto versions are also available with both regular and rookie versions landing 1:18 packs.
Also new are Signature Away Unis and Signature Home Unis. Rookie versions for both are numbered to 49 while vets have 35 copies each. Black parallels are limited to 5.
Monumental Patch Booklets (1/1) are also available with standard and rookie versions.
Brand Logo Autograph Booklets featuring non-rookies are all one-of-ones.

CA United debuts, highlighting captains and alternate captains. Each of these booklets open up to have both a game-used “C” and “A” patch from two different players.
Brilliance has been a staple in The Cup for years. They’re back, landing 1:9 packs. These autographs use a shadow box-style design that integrates acetate into its build.
Goal scorers are the focus of new die-cut Lamp Lighters autographs. The checklist on these mixes veterans (1:12 packs), rookies (1:13 packs) and retired stars (1:40 packs).
For those looking for lots of autographs on one card, there are a couple of book-themed inserts, 9-Way Signature Booklets (/9) and Legends of Hockey (/9), which open up to have on-card signatures from three players.

Cup Trios (/35), Cup Quads (/25) and Cup Sixes (/15) go the multi-swatch route. Each has Premium Material Gold, Red and one-of-one Green Button versions as well.

Other Things to Look for
All-Time Alum (/249) is an insert set dedicated to some of the best to ever skate in the NHL.
The Printing Plates in 2020-21 Upper Deck The Cup go beyond just this set. 2020-21 Upper Deck Hockey Printing Plate Booklets contain all four colors used to make all of the Series 1 and Series 2 base cards, including Young Guns. Some of these also have autographs.
2020-21 SP Signature Edition Legends Printing Plates are also randomly inserted.
Redemptions for Artists Proofs uncut sheets are another thing to look for.
The 2020-21 Upper Deck Exquisite Hockey Finale
The final installment of 2020-21 Upper Deck Exquisite Hockey is available in The Cup.
Among them are are Exquisite Rookie Auto Patch cards numbered to the player’s jersey number. Auto Shield parallels are one-of-ones. There are also Horizontal Variations (/25) that have their own one-of-one Gold parallels.
2003-04 Exquisite Basketball gets recreated with the retro treatment in a few ways. Auto Patch cards of veterans (/25) and retired stars (/10) kick things off. Some players don’t have patches but they do have autographs (/25). Both also have Gold (1/1) parallels. Other 2003-04 Exquisite-themed autograph cards include Limited Logos (/15 or /10) and Limited Logos Rookies (/50).
Exquisite Endorsements autographs return as well, numbered to 50, 25 or 10 for veterans and 50 for rookies.
