Old school hockey card collectors fondly recall the larger sets of yesteryear where getting every card was part of a marathon. The quest to get them all was often a long one and completing the mission felt incredibly rewarding due to both the emotional and financial investment into it.
Starting on December 7, those old emotions could be on their way back for them and a new generation of collectors with the release of 2016-17 Upper Deck Compendium Series One Hockey. A 900-card set unlike anything hockey fans have ever seen, it will be released in three series over the coming months and will only be available via Upper Deck e-Pack.
Packs of eight cards will retail for $0.99 each via the e-Pack website and boxes containing 24 packs are also going to be available.
Much like the first e-Pack-only hockey release, 2015-16 Upper Deck Fusion Hockey, collectors will be able to combine the cards they have purchased or traded for into physical parallel cards. Multiple levels of parallels are available and should be earned based on the number of copies of a card that have been collected. Building sets of the base cards or inserts will also result in achievement cards.
Base Set and Parallels
The first 300 cards make up the first series and there is a reward to receive a pair of SP Achievement cards of Sidney Crosby and Carey Price for their efforts. Completing Series 2 and Series 3 will also result in additional SP Achievement cards (Connor McDavid and Steven Stamkos, followed by Alex Ovechkin and Patrick Kane). Getting all 900 cards in your collection by an yet-to-be specified deadline will earn a Wayne Gretzky SP Achievement card.
There is an additional way to collect as well, as collectors can exchange 10 copies of the same card for a Blue parallel. Further upgrades see five Blue cards become a Red and five Reds become a Gold. Additionally, Magenta parallels (1:3) are randomly inserted in packs. If a collector manages to collect a full series or all 900 cards in a specific color, their SP Achievement cards will be in the corresponding color. Parallel cards can become physical cards to be sent directly to the collector or sold via Check Out My Cards.
Ultimately, there is a grand reward for completing either the Magenta or Gold parallel sets for the SP Achievements. Those making the Magenta version will randomly receive one of four Autographed Magenta Parallel Rookies and the Gold set will yield an autographed Gretzky card.
Inserts
In terms of inserts, 2016-17 Upper Deck Compendium Series One Hockey is expected to keep things relatively simple. A pair of sets have been revealed and are called Net Destroyers and Carbon F/X (both 1:12). Completing each set will result in Heart & Soul Achievement cards of Jonathan Toews and Henrik Zetterberg.
While the insert program has yet to be revealed for the upcoming releases, there are expected to be at least seven Heart & Soul Achievement cards, including the final reward.
