Cutting to the chase is a big thing for many collectors and in 2016-17 Upper Deck Game Used Hockey, there is a real emphasis on connecting fans with the biggest moments from the past year through relics connected to events like the NHL All-Star Game and the Stanley Cup Final.
With a slight change in its configuration which sees a sixth card added to the box along with a lower price, there is also the guarantee of either an autograph of a premium memorabilia hit inside. The product will also be available via ePack.
Base Set
The SP Game Used base set is one of the most limited in the hobby as the trend in recent years has each of the 100 cards numbered to the depicted player’s jersey. Expect to find a strong assortment of new talents and carryovers in the 100-card Authentic Rookies subset as well. For half of the set, the last card in the run will be autographed and be accompanied in pack with a certificate of authenticity.

There are several parallel versions for these cards which include Rainbow (/200 plus the player’s age), Orange Rainbow (/100 plus draft year), and Green Snow Storm (one-of-one). Added value can be found with parallels such as Gold Jersey (/499), Gold Spectrum Patch (/49), Blue Auto (1:6), Red Auto Jersey (1:12), and Red Spectrum Auto Patch (/25).
Memorabilia
One of the hallmarks of the SP Game Used brand as of late has been the inclusion of memorabilia pieces from significant NHL events such as outdoor and All-Star Games. Among the collections displayed on the promotional material from Upper Deck included 2016 NHL All-Star Skills Relic Blends and All-Star Skills Game Gear. Also revealed were 2016 NHL Stadium Series Fabrics and 2016 NHL Winter Classic Game-Used Pucks. Net Cord inserts will also be produced for some sets with the added bonus of one-of-one Net Cord Shield Logos.
One of the most desirable chases from these historical-type cards comes from last year’s Stanley Cup Final. There were three types revealed, including Game-Used Pucks (1:840), Net Cord (/25), and Net Cord Shield Logo (one-of-one).
New to 2016-17 Upper Deck SP Game Used Hockey are a couple of compelling concepts debuting. Banner Year has event-used pieces from banners that were hung at various NHL events and should have colorful swatches. Even more striking are the Frameworks cards which have a large piece of memorabilia behind what appears to be a layer of acetate that gives the illusion of a jersey hanging in a shadowbox.
Returning for another season are hits such as Game Gear (standard and special event versions) and the generous swatch pieces of Supreme Patches, Supreme Gloves, and Supreme Pads. Draft Day Marks lettermen cards are back, too, with each letter in the player’s last name limited to 10 copies for veterans and 35 for rookies.
