2017-18 Leaf Hockey has several elements that will be familiar to long-time collectors. It also has some elements that are new. No matter the case, the product has been given an all-hits spin with every card coming with autographs or memorabilia.
2017-18 Leaf Hockey Overview
Drawing from sports card history, 1948 Leaf and 1960 Leaf both take vintage designs and give them a modern twist. Not only has the look shifted over to hockey, but swatches have been added to the mix. The checklist for both of these draw from the past. 1948 Leaf cards focus on early pioneers like Georges Vezina and Cyclone Taylor. 1960 Leaf cards take on players from that era like Gordie Howe and Maurice Richard.
The 1990 Leaf Baseball design is used for separate autograph and memorabilia inserts. Signatures include such ’90s stars as Mario Lemieux, Brett Hull and Sergei Fedorov. On the relic side, there’s Steve Yzerman, Dominik Hasek and Jaromir Jagr, among others.
Some of Leaf’s inserts from the ’90s are also back in 2017-18 Leaf Hockey. The Gold Leaf Rookie name returns as an autographed insert. Leaf Gold All-Stars shift to a dual-memorabilia approach with such teammate pairings as Paul Kariya and Teeme Selanne, and Lemieux with Jagr.
The Distinguished Series, which has both autograph and memorabilia versions, may not be a name the evokes nostalgia at first. But the design should. It’s a play on the original Elite Series inserts from the 1990s. But since Panini is using the Elite Series still for its various Donruss lines, that makes a direct port over difficult.
Rounding out the relics are a few more inserts. The Sensational Swatch comes with a jumbo patch. Dignified Heir has memorabilia from a legend alongside a second swatch they passed the proverbial torch to. Finally, Masked Warriors spotlight goalies with six swatches on one card.

2017-18 Leaf Hockey goes even more directly to the past with some autographs on original 1993-94 Leaf Hockey cards. Signers for these include Pavel Bure, Lemieux, Hull and more.
