A familiar name is making its way back to hockey card collectors thanks to Upper Deck and it will only be found at Canadian Walmart locations. With the roots of the brand going back to the 1950s and sporadic appearances over the last decade, 2016-17 Parkhurst Hockey marks a new era with a release that is friendly to both kids and wallets alike.
Available in gravity feed or fat packs in addition to blaster boxes, it hits in mid-December and could make the perfect stocking stuffer for a lapsed collector, hardcore fan, or new faces to the world of hockey cards. It is old school collecting with some of the modern features that hobbyists appreciate.
Base Set and Parallels
With a whopping 400-card base set, 2016-17 Parkhurst Hockey is reminiscent of the big sets that came out in the 1970s and 1980s. There are 330 veteran players, many of which will be depicted with new teams, plus 66 rookies from this season, and four checklists.
For more of a challenge, there are two parallels for each card. Red Borders will be seeded once in every three packs while Black Borders are slightly tougher at 1:12. In order to build a parallel set quicker, consider breaking a Fat Pack that has four Red Borders and one Black Border card.
Inserts and Autographs
The insert program in 2016-17 Parkhurst Hockey is spread across all packaging, but each one has a unique twist. While the regular versions of the Rookie Parade cards are numbered to 999, the Blaster boxes have an exclusive Gold parallel (/99) and gravity feed packs have a Red parallel that is limited to 199 copies. Rookie Parade Blue Autographs are not numbered, but are in both types of packaging (1:240 blaster packs, 1:216 gravity packs).
Fat Packs, meanwhile, have an insert collection of their own in Top 25. The regular edition of those cards are seeded once per, but have tougher Red (/100) and Blue (/25) parallels which could be a challenge to find on the secondary market.
Four different non-memorabilia inserts are coming in all packs as well and there is expected to be one per pack according to sales materials. NHL Centennial Salute is the most common (1:5 gravity/blaster packs, 1:2 fat packs) and All-Star Favorites (1:10 gravity/blaster packs, 1:5 fat packs) are sure to have a strong checklist. Letter on the Sweater should have a captain’s theme while Protectors of the Net is all about the NHL’s best goalies (both 1:13 gravity/blaster packs, 1:7 fat packs).
