With each year that we put the 1990s behind us, there seems to be a growing nostalgia among hockey card collectors for some of the brands of yesteryear. Each season, Upper Deck looks to satisfy that yen for the past and 2016-17 Fleer Showcase Hockey is expected to deliver plenty of retro fun once it comes out in March.
Reconfigured and with a lower box price, Showcase averages a hit of some sort in each pack and the roster includes hobby favorites such as the iconic Precious Metal Gems plus lots of rookie ink.
Base Set and Parallels
The 2016-17 Fleer Showcase Hockey base set is made up of 100 cards featuring veteran players, but one of the big draws for this product in recent years has been the strong assortment of Hot Prospects rookie cards (/399). A large freshman and carryover class also sees the debut of Hot Prospects Quads, which could deliver some interesting combinations.
Both the base set and the Hot Prospects subsets will have two parallel versions. The most common are the Red Glow cards (1:6 for base, /25 for Hot Prospects) and White Hot are much tougher (/25 for base, /5 for Hot Prospects).
Inserts
Part of the appeal for many collectors that break Showcase are the large insert collections, which could almost work as stand-alone sets at times. Metal Universe (1:5), the shiny late-90s staple, is back in full force with a new Planet Metal parallel (1:60) and Precious Metal Gems that come in Red (/150), Blue (/50), Green (/10), and Purple (/5).
SkyBox Premium Prospects (/499) return with Star Rubies (/50) and Sparkling Diamonds (/5) parallels. Throwbacks to the Ultra (/599 with Platinum Medallion /25 and Violet Medallion /25) and 30 different Flair Row 0 Rookies (1:5, plus Blue Ice /199 and one-of-one Masterpieces) may also prove to be a solid hit when coming out of packs. There will be a Flair Row 1 set which is made up of 20 established players (1:5) that has the same Blue Ice (/99) and Masterpieces (one-of-one) levels to track down.
New to Showcase are the EX-2017 inserts, which fall once per box for the regular version. Popular in other sports 20 years ago, they will have very difficult parallel Essential Credentials Now and Essential Credentials Future which are sequentially numbered in relation to the card’s number within the set (ranging from 1 to 42 and vice-versa).
Traditional inserts are also planned for 2016-17 Fleer Showcase Hockey with a roster that boasts Ultra Scoring Kings (1:12) and Flair Hot Gloves (1:90).
Autographs and Memorabilia
Each box of 2016-17 Fleer Showcase Hockey will have one signed card on average and the announced lineup focuses entirely on rookies. There are two tiers of Hot Prospects Autos numbered to 299 or 499 with Red Glow (/49 or /25) or White Hot (/15 or /5) parallels. Even more exciting than that, though, are the Hot Prospects Auto Patches (two tiers, /135 or /85) and their White Hot FX edition (/10).
