For the past three seasons, the best junior talent in Canada has been celebrated with a trading card release and collectors will be able to get an in-depth look at some players that will have an impact on the game in the near future with 2016-17 Upper Deck Team Canada Juniors Hockey.
Scheduled to arrive in stores on August 24, each box is expected to contain four strong hits that could be autographs, memorabilia, or even manufactured logo patches in addition to at least seven parallel cards. This will be an early look at players such as Mitch Marner, Dylan Strome, and Mathew Barzal that are expected to crack their respective NHL lineups in the fall.
Base Set
According to preliminary information provided by via a sales sheet, 2016-17 Upper Deck Team Canada Juniors Hockey will have a base set made up of 162 cards. The first 100 cards will be make up the shell set and be augmented by a short printed Program of Excellence subset that falls once in every four packs (1:48 for Rainbow Gold parallel). If previous sets are any indication, the base collection should depict members of the U-18 and U-20 Men’s teams along with the Women’s National Team, but this has not been confirmed.
A gold parallel (1:3) will exist for the 100 regular cards, but there will be a bigger chase for more limited variations like Exclusives (/175), High Gloss (/25), and Printing Plates (one-of-one).
Inserts
2016-17 Upper Deck Team Canada Juniors Hockey also throws back to the company’s rich history of Team Canada cards with inserts with ’92-93 U-20 Retro and ’93-94 U-18 Retro collections. Both come at a rate of 1:76 packs, but there is also a Retro Legends (1:192) insert set which will take a look back at some of the best to wear the Maple Leaf during their junior days.
Autographs and Memorabilia
The memorabilia and autograph component of 2016-17 Upper Deck Team Canada Juniors Hockey begins with Team Canada Men’s Jersey (1:16) and Team Canada Women’s Jersey (1:32) sets. Both have a gold parallel that is numbered to the depicted player’s jersey. There are also versions with two tiers of patches, but the Men’s (/125 or /175) are autographed while the Women’s (/25 and /49) are not.
Upper Deck is also making Team Canada Material Duos (1:32) and Quads (1:128) that are going to have ultra- limited Black Tag (/2 for Duos, one-of-one for Quads) and Gold Spectrum (/5 for Duos, /3 for Quads) variations.
Adding to the excitement are Local Legends Relics (1:56 with Gold /25 and Gold Spectrum /5) and Jumbo Materials that can come as regular Jersey (/75), Autograph Jersey (/25), Premium Materials (/10), or Autographed Premium Materials (/5). Some of the Premium Materials cards will have full letter pieces from the Team Canada logo and a dedicated collector could spell out the country’s name if they can track them all down.
Collectors may also appreciate the Maple Leaf Forever Die Cut cards which have three levels of scarcity (1:190. 1:200, or 1:310) when it comes to autographs from the top Men’s team players. The memorabilia version of these cards is going to be quite scarce with the Women’s Patch dropping once in every 520 packs. The Gold Sleeve Patch (/3) and Logo Swatch (one-of-one) cards will be prime pieces and heavily chased by player collectors once they pop out of boxes.
Finally, a Black Autograph parallel for many base set cards will exist and will be difficult to pull since they are just limited to five copies each.
